Forgive Me, Friend, For the Times I Wasn’t Available to Connect With You

April 18, 2016

My last blog post was about connections with others and our craving for them. OK, I’ll admit, I was a little proud of the way I avoided giving easy answers in that post.

That little piece of pride should be been a red flag to me – Trouble Coming! [Read more…]

A Note to Self.

February 16, 2016

What do you say to yourself on a typical day?

If you wrote it all down, like a letter to yourself, what would it look like?

Would it look like a love letter?

I think our lives read like a letter, a testimony, our words and actions witness to the truth and value we hold, the things that matter.

“You show that you are a letter from Christ…

written not with ink..

but on tablets of human hearts.” (II Corinthians 3:3)

What am I writing on the tablet of my own heart?

What words am I speaking? Sometimes I engage in  ‘stinking thinking’ (televangelist Joyce Meyor’s apt description of unhealthy thought patterns).

Words can wound. Words can cut. Even words to myself.

Our thinking is referred to as our ‘thought life’.

[tweetthis display_mode=”box”]I wonder how much of our thoughts truly bring life? [/tweetthis]

If you are like me, my thoughts tend to be a bit self focused, judgmental, analytical, dare I say, critical? Here are some examples:

  • ‘Why did I do that?’
  • ‘Stupid’
  • ‘I wish hadn’t ___’.

Our thoughts can be a self critique as we move through our day. Our analysis of our every choice, our nonstop examination as to how our life is working.

I believe my words to self need a rehaul. Major renovation. Home improvement!

I want to speak words of grace to myself. Nourishing words. Healing words. Words that reflect God’s love towards me.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience. Bear with each other and forgive…as the Lord forgave you.”

Colossians 3:13

I suggest we receive our heritage and clothe ourselves with compassion, and begin with our words to self.

Treat ourselves tenderly, with compassion, as the ‘dearly loved’ ones of God.

Let us offer ourselves forgiveness – for mistakes made both past and present and offer ourselves ‘gracious favor’, the definition of blessing.

If you are anything like me – perfectionist seeking, driven, hard on myself (a wee bit self bitter, if I am honest), you’ll understand…

We need grace, pure and simple.

God’s divine and gracious favor, and with that a heaping measure of forgiveness and favor offered towards ourselves.

Let go of our striving. Let go of our image, our expectations for clean houses, children with controlled behavior, perfect functioning lives.

[tweetthis display_mode=”box”]Embrace our identity in Christ – as holy and dearly loved![/tweetthis]

No further qualifications need be met.

It is done. Finished. Cease striving.

Let us begin by speaking truth to ourselves, through blessings. Some specific ideas:

  • Listen to what we are saying to ourselves. Push the Stop or Pause button when we begin a negative comment. Invite God in to help reshape that thought.
  • Bless yourself. Give gracious favor. Forgive yourself readily and offer yourself a kind word, instead of a harsh one.
  • Now the hard one – Try blessing some part of you that you may have been especially hard on (maybe it is a part of your body you wish were different). Bless that body part! Thank God for it. Bless its hard work in keeping you functioning.

You and I are the ‘dearly loved’ ones of God, may our words reflect this truth and may His love permeate our hearts, this day.

Life’s Middles – Do You Like Them?

September 9, 2015

I don’t like the middles. Can you relate?

I love the endings (specifically, happy ones), and I enjoy the beginnings (so much to look forward to, so much hope) – but, life’s middles are not my favorite place. [Read more…]

Are You Running Life on Empty?

August 12, 2015

‘Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired?’ This was a popular ad campaign on a local Christian radio station I listened to in the 90’s. I got so sick and tired of the ‘sick and tired’ campaign that I stopped listening to that radio station.

Does it bother you, like it does me, that Christian’s lives don’t look different from others? It seems like we should have ‘more’ life…..less of the ‘sick and tired’ stuff!

“I have come that they might have life and have it more abundantly.”

John 10:10 [Read more…]

Cleaning up for Church – And Other Such Nonsense.

August 5, 2015

I remember a Sunday morning at church with my family several years ago when I was “caught” arguing with my daughter.

The worst part wasn’t the argument, but the person who saw it.

My harsh words finished, I looked up and my eyes met the eyes of one of the women I admire most at church, a national speaker at Christian conferences on family issues. She looked away quickly, embarrassed, by the scene she had just witnessed in my family. I can tell you, I was even more humiliated, wishing I had not fought with my daughter, and, wishing that she had not witnessed it.

I was probably more sick about being witnessed in this family “scene” than the argument itself. [Read more…]

I live on an island, in the country. A sweet combination. I spend way too much time sitting on a ferry to get to the mainland and my people, thinking about how I should be weeding and pruning our 5 acres, or driving down country roads taking pictures. Nature grabs me – taking pictures delights me. I love to capture nature’s messiness – the wild wonder, the abundant extravagance of blurred green and blue landscapes. I write for similar reasons – to capture small glimpses of the wonders of God, to hold up God’s Word and see the beauty of His holiness. Small snapshots of His glory. I’m so glad you’re here. (for a wee bit more about me. read here)
